Theodore "Ted" Gehrt, 84, of Topeka, passed away Friday, September 19, 2008.
He was born September 16, 1924 in Anguil, Argentina, South America to Rev. Henry M. and Anna (Knoll) Gehrt. He graduated from Alma High School in 1942. He was a United States Navy veteran during WW II.
He was employed by Rock Island and Southern Pacific Railroads retiring in 1986. He was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church and an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Topeka since 1949.
Theodore married Marjorie VanEs April 17, 1949 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Peter (Diane) Gehrt, Kansas City, MO, Paul (Laurie) Gehrt, Smithville, MO; two daughters, Karen (Charles Ongwela) Gehrt, Arlington, TX, Judy (Rick) Weber, Salina, KS; seven grandchildren, Nick, Corey, Keejet, Jon, Caitlyn Gehrt, and Karrie (Weber) Smythia, and Kelly (Weber) Unruh and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, Andrew, Albert, Elmer, and Otto and a great-grandson, Colson Theodore Gehrt.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 901 SW Fillmore, Topeka. Interment with military honors will follow at West Lawn Memorial Gardens, Topeka. Mr. Gehrt will lie in state after 3 p.m., Monday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Topeka Lutheran School or to Midland Hospice Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, Kansas 66606, or to the Charity of the donor's choice.
