Thelma L. Hines

Thelma L. Hines, 84, of Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. She was born on July 6, 1924 in Salina, KS, the daughter of Paul and Mae M. Smith Rockhold. She attended York College in York, NE. She had resided in Concordia, Russell, Tecumseh, Parsons, Mission and Manhattan before moving to Topeka in 1965. Thelma was an elementary school teacher for 20 years and also a homemaker. She was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church, the P.E.O. Sisterhood, the United Methodist Women where she served as past conference President and served on the Denomination Board of Directors of Global Ministries. Thelma married Reverend Don Hines on May 31, 1944 in York, NE. He survives. Other survivors include one son, Gary Hines of Ames, IA, one daughter, Sandra Rekstad of Raytown, MO, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Lowman United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Thelma will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. As per her wishes, the casket will remain closed. Memorial contributions may be given to Lowman United Methodist Church, 4000 S.W. Drury Ln., Topeka, KS 66604.
