Terry Harris

Terry Harris, 86, of Topeka, died Thursday, January 18, 2007 at her home. Ms. Harris was born on April 7, 1920, in Lawrence, the daughter of Earl J. and Frata F. Harris. She was a 1937 graduate of Ottawa High School and received a Bachelor's Degree in vocal music at the University of Kansas in 1941. During World War II, Ms. Harris worked for Lockheed in California, and subsequently taught music in several junior colleges. In 1948, she joined the faculty of Stratford College in Virginia and taught there for three years before leaving to join a faculty friend, Thelma Pearson, in the establishment of the Pearson and Harris Piano and Voice Studio in Richmond, Virginia. She took pride in the professional successes of several of her vocal students. Ms. Harris was a member of Central Methodist Church in Richmond, where she was choir director and soloist. She belonged to Mu Phi Epsilon music fraternity. After moving to Topeka, she joined Grace United Methodist Church and Chapter CS of PEO. She was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia A. Harris, M.D., and is survived by her brother, C. Kenneth Harris and his wife, Jane of Ottawa, two nephews, one niece, four grand nieces and nephews, one great-grand nephew, and long-time friend, Thelma D. Pearson. At her request, Ms. Harris was cremated. A private service will be at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Helping Hands Humane Society, 2625 N.W.
