Terry Bettis, 66, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014.
He was born October 23, 1947, in Brookfield, Missouri, the son of George and Mary (Baumgartner) Bettis. He was a 1965 graduate of Topeka West High School and received a Bachelor's Degree in Business from Washburn University.
Terry founded Bettis Asphalt & Construction, Inc. in 1979.
Terry was united in marriage to Karen Lynn Haley on December 23, 1968 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Eric (Laura) Bettis and Mark (Michelle) Bettis, and a daughter, Ashley Bettis; five grandchildren, Packson and Lauren Bettis and Max, Sam and Alex Bettis; three siblings, Duane (Patricia) Bettis, Cheryl Spencer, and Kim (Mary Grace) Bettis; a sister-in-law, Janis (Harry III) Cook and three nephews, John Hutton, Casey and Brian Bettis and a niece, Amy Bettis.
He was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, The 20-30 Club of Topeka, Kansas Asphalt Producers Association, Washburn Alumni Association, Topeka Country Club and The Topeka YMCA. Terry was nominated and will be honored at the 2014 Junior Achievement Topeka Business Hall of Fame.
Terry excelled in athletics throughout his life. He played baseball at Washburn University and signed a professional baseball contract with the Montreal Expos minor league organization. When he returned to Topeka he was active in coaching and supporting youth athletics. He helped form the Capital City Basketball League, and was instrumental in taking several teams to the National AAU Basketball Tournaments and was actively involved in the Topeka Hammers baseball at SCABA.
Services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, February 15, 2014, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 3625 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka, KS 66614. Entombment will follow in Mt. Hope Mausoleum, Topeka. Terry will lie in state at the funeral home after 2 p.m., Friday at the Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Shawnee County Parks & Recreation Foundation, c/o Bettis Family Sports Complex, 3137 SE 29th St., Topeka, KS 66605, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Washburn University Foundation, 1729 SW MacVicar Avenue, Topeka, KS 66604 to benefit the Terry Bettis Family Athletic Scholarship or Alzheimer's Association, 3625 SW 29th St., Suite 102, Topeka, KS 66614.
