Susan A. (Grieme) Bales, 75, of Topeka, passed away Monday, October 18, 2021 from ALS. She was born on August 12, 1946 in Storm Lake, IA to Donald and Betty (Jennett) Grieme. She attended high school in Alta, IA and went on to college at Buena Vista University.
Susan married Dale Hemmingsen on April 6, 1968. During their union in marriage, their daughter, Angie, was born. They later divorced. On June 6, 1987, she married Herbert Lloyd Dyson. Herbert passed away on August 29, 2001 of brain cancer. On October 5, 2002, she married George Bales in Topeka, Kansas. He survives.
Other survivors include her daughter, Angie (Dan) Maloy of Fonda, IA; grandson, Nate Titus of Alta, IA; her siblings, Barbara Reel of Storm Lake, IA, Larry (Susie) Grieme and Paul (Lisa) Grieme of Alta, IA.
She is also survived by her step-children, Darci Schlobohm of Meriden, KS, Tanya (Jonathan) Shaw of Lawrence, KS and Michael (Catherine) Bales of Hanahan, SC; and three step grandchildren, Hailey Schlobohm, Mary Shaw and John Bales.
Susan was a member of First Lutheran Church of Topeka and was a part of the adult choir.
She had a passion for singing and listening to music. Susan loved her family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them.
While Susan was working, she spent 17 years working as a silk presser for a Dry Cleaner. After retirement, she volunteered at St. Francis Hospital for 15 years. For the last five years of her volunteer service, she worked in the gift shop.
A visitation will be held from 6:00pm- 8:00pm on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home- Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66604. A Funeral Ceremony will be at 1:00 pm, Friday, October 22, 2021 at the First Lutheran Church, 1234 SW Fairlawn Road, Topeka, Kansas. Cremation will follow the ceremony. A graveside service will be at 10:00am on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake, IA. In Susan's honor, memorial contributions may be made to First Lutheran Church 1234 SW Fairlawn Road, Topeka, KS 66604.
