Steven Alan Fenske of Wakarusa, Kansas died Monday May 13th, 2013 at the age of 58.
Steve was born in Audubon, Iowa on January 1, 1955 to David and Arlene (Jensen) Fenske.
He graduated from Audubon High School in 1973. He married Sherry Akers on August 10, 1974 in a ceremony in the back yard of his parents' house in Audubon.
In the mid-1980s, Steve combined his passions of working as a mechanic and road racing sports cars when he started his business Midwest Sports Racing in Papillion, Nebraska. After many successful years, he decided to move the business to Osage City, Kansas in 1992 in order to be more centrally located to serve his customers. It was at this time that he changed the name to Midwest Spec Racer. The business remained there until 2005 when he moved to Topeka, Kansas, where it remained until his passing. Through the forming of this business and his involvement in the SCCA he started many relationships that lasted his lifetime.
Steve was at his best when it came to anything mechanical. Never satisfied with a race car that was "good enough", he designed and built his own prototype race car from the ground up and named it the Fenske G2.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Alissa and Kendall Smith of Shawnee, Kansas; Sherry (Akers) Fenske of Ross, Iowa; mother Arlene Fenske-Koons; brother Craig Fenske of Las Cruces, New Mexico; sister Dona Nixon of Yahatz, Oregon; nieces and nephews; and too many friends to list in this obituary.
Steve was preceded by his father, David Fenske and his beloved "Bro" Rufus.
Cremation has taken place. An all-day celebration of Steve's life will take place at his shop in Tire Building 1 at Heartland Park Topeka racetrack on Saturday June 1, 2013 with a lunch at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to the Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st Street, Topeka, KS 66604.
