Stephen Everett Shelton, M.D., 78, of Topeka, died on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, in Topeka.
Steve was born on September 24, 1935, in St. Joseph, MO, to Everett Shelton and Kathleen (Jesse) Shelton Franklin. He was an only child. He grew up in Laramie, WY. He completed high school at the Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, MO, in 1953. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1957. Following graduation, he attended medical school at the University of Colorado, graduating in 1961. He moved to Topeka to attend the Menninger School of Psychiatry where he completed his medical residency in 1967.
Steve worked at the Topeka State Hospital for a number of years before entering private practice. He was on staff at Stormont Vail Hospital and St. Francis Hospital. His practice included work in Topeka, Manhattan, Leavenworth, Hiawatha and Emporia. He was a member of the Shawnee County Medical Society, Kansas Medical Society, and American Psychiatric Association.
Steve was drafted into the U.S. Army Reserve, where he served from 1963 until 1970.
On November 18, 1961, Steve married Marlene Dolores Stalder of Humbolt, NE. The couple became members of Countryside United Methodist Church when they moved to Topeka. They enjoyed traveling, and Steve especially enjoyed learning the languages of places they visited. He also enjoyed photography, opera, and other classical music. He was an enthusiastic Kansas University sports fan.
Survivors include his wife, Marlene, son, Blake Shelton, Topeka, KS; son, Mark (April) Shelton, New York, NY; grandsons, Spencer and Hewitt Shelton, New York, NY. He was preceded in death by his father and mother.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 9, at Countryside United Methodist Church Chapel, 3221 S.W. Burlingame Road, Topeka. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will follow at a later date at the Four Mile Congregational Church Cemetery near Humboldt, NE.
