Stephen (Steve) D. Crandall, 62, of Topeka, passed away at his home on Sunday, January 10, 2010. He was born August 27, 1947 in Wichita, KS, to Harvey and Harriette Shuart Crandall. Steve moved at the age of 6 months with his family to a farm southwest of Fort Scott, KS. He attended the first 4 years of grade school in a one-room school house at Pleasant Valley. He graduated from Fort Scott Senior High in 1965. He graduated from Fort Hays State University with a B.S. in Business in 1974. Steve started his career of 34 years in the insurance industry with the Western Insurance Co. in Fort Scott. He moved to Topeka in 1978 and worked for several different insurance companies before going to work for the Kansas Insurance Dept. in 1993. He retired after 15 ½ years due to failing health. Steve married Martha Woodbury in Topeka in 1984. She preceded him in death in 2006. He is also preceded in death by his mother, Harriette Crandall in 1981. He is survived by his father, Harvey Crandall of Salina, KS, daughter, Terri Woodbury of Auburn, KS, son, Michael (Beth) Woodbury of Topeka, KS, and sister, Janet (John) Mai of Salina, KS. Other survivors include three grandchildren, Lucas and Mackenzi Woodbury of Topeka, KS, and Rachel Woodbury of Auburn, KS, and numerous nieces, nephews, great- nephews, one great-niece and a large extended family. A Celebration of Life service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Countryside United Methodist Church, 3221 SW Burlingame, Topeka. Burial will follow in Lynn Creek Cemetery, SE 61st & Berryton Rd. Steve will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to Countryside United Methodist Church, 3221 SW Burlingame Rd., Topeka, KS 66611 or to the Fellowship and Faith Ministry, Inc., 708 SE Lime St., Topeka, KS 66607.
