Stanley Neil House of Topeka passed away peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease on Wednesday, December 12, 2007. He was 79.
Stan, as he was known, was born on June 7, 1928 in Nickerson to William G. and Anne Marie (Capshaw) House. He graduated from Goddard High School, where he was a member of the football, basketball, and track teams. He attended Wichita State University. Stan worked at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company from immediately after his high school graduation until he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951. He served in the Navy until 1955 and is a veteran of the Korean War. He then returned to Southwestern Bell, where he worked as a traffic engineer and enjoyed a 38 year career with the company. He retired in 1984.
Prior to his illness Stan was very active in the Topeka community. He was a member of Northland Christian Church, the Arab Shrine Temple, Southwestern Bell Telephone Pioneers, and Topeka Masonic Lodge #99. He coached baseball at Ken Berry and was very active in his church, serving as a deacon and as a Sunday School teacher for many years. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Arab Shrine Golf Unit, giving him the opportunity to travel and play golf, two of his favorite hobbies. He also enjoyed woodworking, landscaping, and painting.
Stan married Julia J. Ritchey on June 19, 1949 in Cheney. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Joy R. Burchfield of Topeka; a son, Robert A. (Susan) House of Olathe; grandchildren Rachel Burchfield, Ryan House, Tyler House, and Bryant House; a brother, William "Bill" House of Mesa, Arizona; and a sister, Judy Allen of Haysville. Stan was preceded in death by a son, S.N. House Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 17, 2007 at First Christian Church of Topeka. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Vinita Cemetery in Kingman County. Stan will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 16, 2007. His family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
