Shirley May Manning, 92, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at the Midland Hospice House.
She was born August 27, 1930, in rural Cherryvale, Kansas, the daughter of Vern and Ethel (Majors) Wallingford. Shirley married Paul Arthur Manning on March 26, 1953 in Topeka, KS.
Shirley was employed by the State of Kansas for 39 years.
She and Paul were members of the Lowman United Methodist Church of Topeka for over 60 years. They were also members of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion.
Shirley was a founding member of the X-Belles, a group of women who met while working at Bell Telephone Company over 70 years ago. The group is still active and she enjoyed the friendships she made through the years.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and baking red velvet cakes for her daughter Pam. Shirley and Paul would often spend time traveling. She loved keeping her home beautiful, inside and out. Shirley loved spending time with her family, entertaining and antiquing.
She leaves behind one daughter, Pamela L. Manning; son in law, Mark Paine; grandchildren, Nicole Paine and Luke (Lauren) Paine and one great-grandchild, Henry Paine. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Manning; parents and four sisters, Hazel Taylor, Leona Pinkston, Dorothy Sands and Jane Howey.
A Funeral Ceremony will be at 2:00pm on Monday, October 17, 2022 at the Mount Hope Funeral Chapel, 4700 SW 17th, Topeka, Kansas 66604. Her family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Lowman United Methodist Church, 4101 SW 15th St., Topeka, KS 66604.
