Shirley Horn, 79, Topeka, passed away Friday, January 10, 2014 at a local hospital.
Shirley was born November 17, 1934 in Eminence, MO, the daughter of Burr and Berniece (Sutton) Powell.
She graduated from Northeast High School in Kansas City, MO and attended The Salvation Army School for Officer's Training in Chicago.
She and her husband both served as ministers for The Salvation Army and she worked for the Menninger Foundation.
Shirley married Dale E. Horn on June 1, 1956. He died January 10, 2009. Survivors include children, Jeffery Horn, Indianapolis, IN, Susan (Scott) Ives, Topeka, David Horn, Topeka, Carol (Kevin) Bigham, Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Erin, Brian and Eric Horn, Heather and Brandon Ives, Nathan, Nicole, Sarah and Josiah Horn, Kyle, Alicia and Jamie Bigham; great-grandchildren, Zoey Bigham and Corbin Horn; and sister, Kathryn Mathews; and many close friends. She was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Donna Horn.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on, Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 13, 2014 at the funeral home.
The family suggests expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to The Salvation Army, 1320 SE 6th, Topeka, KS 66607.
