She was born August 26, 1936, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Walter and Alta (Buchanan) Birtell. She graduated from Auburn High School.
Shirley found the gift of eternal life by accepting Jesus as her savior at a young age. She shared this gift with many people in her lifetime. She was a woman of great faith, a prayer warrior to the end. She enjoyed watching football, her flower gardens, feeding her birds and jigsaw puzzles. She could pick up a piece and know exactly where it went, the more difficult the puzzle, the better. She was happy to be married to Dale for 30 years. Family was very important to her. The love she had for her grandchildren was never ending. Her laughter will be remembered by all. She led by example of having an open heart, working hard, making others feel at ease and was an outstanding hand quilter. Her family is going to miss hearing her fun stories and her genuine laugh.
Shirley married George Thatcher, he preceded her in death. She later married Dale Carls on August 26, 1989 in Auburn, Kansas, he survives.
