Shannon Y. Cortez, 35, of Topeka, passed away on Friday, April 13, 2012 at Stormont-Vail Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on July 4, 1976 in , South Carolina to William and Isabell Boatwright.
Shannon graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor's degree in Family Studies and Human Services. She was a U.S. Army veteran, with rank of sergeant, and served during the war in Iraq.
On April 22, 2007 she married Edward "Tony" Cortez in Myrtle Beach, SC. He survives. She is also survived by her son, Joseph Young of the home, her mother, eight brothers, four sisters, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held in South Carolina on Friday, April 20. Bethea Funeral Home in Bennettsville, SC will be assisting the family in South Carolina.
A memorial service will be held in Topeka at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Race Against Breast Cancer, PO Box 4458, Topeka, KS 66604. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
