Sarah Thacher McNeive, 72, Topeka, died peacefully Monday, May 17.
Born July 17, 1931 in Waterville, Kansas, to Phil and Octavia Thacher, she was a life-long resident of Topeka. She attended Randolph Elementary, Boswell Junior High and Topeka High Schools, graduating with the THS class of 1949. Following two years at Colorado College where she became a Delta Gamma, she returned to Topeka to complete her degree at Washburn University.
Sarah married Bill McNeive Sept. 24, 1955. Together they raised two daughters, Kate and Jane, in their Potwin home.
Sarah volunteered countless hours to several causes that were important to her. As a young homemaker, those included the Junior League of Topeka and the Delta Gamma Alumni Association. She has always been an enthusiastic supporter of the THS class of '49 and was actively organizing its 55th reunion when she died. She was a founding member and integral part of the Topeka High School Historical Society.
Sarah's interest in genealogy was extensive. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames, the Ancient and Honorable Artillery of Boston and similar groups reflecting her family
roots. She became an active volunteer with the Topeka Cemetery many years ago and is known throughout the city for her tours, presentations, fund-raising and board work on its behalf.
A lifelong member of the Topeka Country Club and the First Congregational Church, Sarah was also active with the Potwin Neighborhood Association. Her knowledge of Topeka history was appreciated by authors and historians who turned to her as a consultant and resource.
Sarah is survived by her husband Bill and her father Phil Thacher, both of Topeka; her two daughters Kate McNeive (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Jane Albright (Kansas City, Mo.), son-in-law David Albright and granddaughter Joy Albright; her sisters Becky Lowell (Savannah, Ga.) and Lucy Jackson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and their families.
Sarah will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel Wednesday from noon-8. Her family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Services honoring Sarah will be held Thursday, May 20, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 1701 Collins in Topeka. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Sarah had requested that memorial donations be made to the Topeka High School Historical Society, 800 W. 10th, Topeka, KS, 66612 and St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 204 North Nebraska, Waterville, KS, 66548. The family has added the Topeka Cemetery Association, 1601 E. 10th, Topeka, KS, 66607-1583.
