Sandra Mills, 76, of Topeka, KS, went to be with the Lord the morning of August 21, 2018, where she has joined family and friends in a joyous reunion.
Sandra was born on July 4, 1942 in Oak Grove, LA, the daughter of Audis W. and Jeanette Hatten. She graduated from Oak Grove High School in 1960. After high school she attended Northeast Louisiana State College. She graduated from Kaw Valley Vocational Technical School with a degree in Licensed Practical Nursing. She worked as a nurse at Saint Francis Hospital, at The Menninger Clinic, and at Valeo Behavioral Healthcare.
In life she was crowned a queen, gifted as an artist, a musician, an intuitive and a healer, yet Sandra claimed her proudest title was that of "mother," and God's greatest gifts shared with her were "five of the greatest children:" Kevin, Karla, Kyle, James, and Julie. She enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family and friends. Later in life she combined her love for people with her nursing experience and provided private in-home care. Sandra was an accomplished pianist and could make the piano sing. She adored angels. She was an artist at heart and blessed many people with her unique creations. She loved animals and rescued many as pets over the years, including several dogs, cats, birds, and even a duck.
Survivors include five children: Kevin S. (Susan) McCarter, Karla J. (Todd) Burnett, Kyle H. (Michelle) McCarter, James K. (Gretchen) McCarter, Julie M. McCarter; and nine grandchildren, to whom she was known as "Granny Star:" Taylor, Garrett, Brody, and Paetyn McCarter; Hunter, Preston, and Piper McCarter; Annie and Tuff Burnett.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Audis and Jeanette Hatten.
Cremation is planned. No services are scheduled at this time. A celebration of life will be planned in the future.
