Sam E. Senseney of Topeka passed away, Friday, February 8, 2008 at the age of 93 at Palliative Care Center at Stormont-Vail Hospital.
Sam was born in Thayer, MO on July 29, 1914, the son of Sam E. and Susie E. Powell Senseney. He graduated from high school at Kennett, MO and attended Southeast Missouri State College at Cape Girardeau, MO.
He married Goldena M. Denny on April 2, 1936 in Alton, MO. He attended Williams Institute of Mortuary Science in Kansas City, Kansas, graduating in 1938. He became a licensed embalmer the following year and was employed by Carl Konantz Funeral Home in Lamar, MO until 1941.
Sam and his wife purchased a funeral home in Greenfield, MO. They operated it until selling it in 1949, when they moved to Moran, KS, where they bought the Miner Theatre. They lived in Moran until 1956, when they moved to Chanute, KS. Sam was employed by the State of Kansas at the Southeast Kansas Tuberculosis Hospital in Chanute as Director of the Adjunctive Therapy Department for 17 years. He retired in 1974. They moved to Topeka, KS in 1979.
Sam was a member of the West Side Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Goldena M. Senseney. He is survived by daughters, Nancy Brooks and her husband, Robert, Topeka, Sue Fowler and her husband, Ferman, Topeka; a son, Denny Senseney and wife, Erlene of Wichita; nine grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Sam rarely met a stranger and will be fondly remembered by his family, friends, neighbors and many others for his friendly, kind outgoing manner.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12 at West Side Christian Church. Burial will follow in Iantha Cemetery, Iantha, MO. Sam will lie in state after 2:00 p.m., Monday, Feb. 11 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
