Ruth Maxine Wieland, 96, of Topeka, passed away on April 13, 2025 surrounded by love.
Born on May 18, 1928, to Marvin and Thelma Boyce, Ruth's journey began in the heart of Emporia, where she flourished as a student. After completing her education at Emporia High School, Ruth pursued her passion for teaching at Emporia Teacher’s College, a calling that would inspire many young minds.
Fate played its hand when, while working at the local drug store, she captured the attention of a charming patron, Mr. Virgil Wieland. In a playful bid to win her affection, Virgil resorted to an amusing ruse involving a pretend theft, igniting a connection that would blossom into a lifelong love.
In 1948, Ruth and Virgil exchanged vows at Grace Methodist Church in Emporia, embarking on a journey filled with love and adventure, and together they celebrated the joys of parenthood with the arrival of their two children. Their shared passions—including many camping trips, playing cards, and square dancing—highlighted their vibrant life together, with Ruth's spirited and fun-loving nature making every moment special.
Ruth leaves behind her daughter Debbie (Kurt) Baughman; her sister Marcia Guard; her brother Glen Boyce; four grandchildren: Andrea (Kevin) Glur, Stephanie (Jon) Matchett, Tom (Serena) Wieland, and Jason Wieland; as well as seven great-grandchildren, and two (almost three!) great-great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved deeply.
Preceding her in death were her devoted husband, Virgil Wieland; her brother Don Boyce; her sisters Lola Farr and Helen Thill; and her son, Terry Wieland.
A graveside service will take place on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at 1:00 pm at the Rosean Cemetery in Emporia, Kansas with Pastor Jerry Schmid officiating.
As we celebrate the beautiful life of Ruth Maxine Wieland, we remember her not just for the years she lived but for the love she shared and the laughter she inspired. Her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
