Ruth Moore

Ruth Swearingen Moore, 70, Brown County native, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, October 22, 2006, shortly after arrival at the hospital in Auburn, Nebraska. She and her husband were returning home to Topeka after visiting their children in Council Bluffs.

Ruth was born June 9, 1936, in Brown County in the Robinson Township, one of two children of John and Lucille Zimmers Swearingen. She grew up in the Robinson-Irving townships and attended Prairie Springs country school (third generation) prior to graduating from Hiawatha High School with the class of 1954. Ruth later graduated from Emporia State Teachers College in 1957. She taught school briefly prior to raising her family. She enjoyed 'bookkeeping duties' when ever the opportunity arose.

Mrs. Moore had been very active in her Church , ladies organizations of the Church; and PEO. Ruth was an excellent golfer, an avid bridge player, and enjoyed oil painting. All of her interests changed when she suffered a massive stroke in October 1988.

She married Cameron Moore, October 27, 1957. They lived at Junction City for a short time before moving to Abilene where they lived for 25 years. They moved to Topeka in 1985 where they have since resided. He survives.

Also surviving are a son Douglas Moore and wife Kathy of Council Bluffs, Iowa;
a daughter Deanne Reed and husband Marion of Glenwood, Iowa;a brother Eugene Swearingen and wife Nancy of rural Hiawatha; five grandchildren: Jaime Moore, Kelsey Moore, Shawn Moore, Blake Reed, and Katherine Reed.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents.

The body had been cremated. Celebration of life services are planned for 11 a.m. Friday, October 27, at First Lutheran Church, 1234 SW Fairlawn Rd, Topeka. Private inurnment will take place at a later date at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Brown County Historical Society, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha 66434; First Lutheran Church, 1234 Fairlawn 66604; or Trinity Lutheran Church, Third and Cedar, Abilene, 67410.
