Ruth Elaine Timken

Ruth Elaine Timken, 86, died Jan. 24, 2006 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

Mrs. Timken had taught in a one room school house in Ness City and in elementary school in Lewis, Kansas. During and after World War II, she worked at the Topeka Air Corps Specialized Depot. She later was a secretary at Lyman Grade School and librarian at Grant School, both in Topeka.

She was born March 20, 1919 in Ness City, Kansas, the daughter of Harry and Alice Kirberg Rigby. She graduated from Ness City High School and attended Fort Hays State University. She resumed teaching to support her parents when her father became ill. Mrs. Timken later graduated from Washburn University with honors.

Mrs. Timken was a member of First United Methodist Church in Topeka.

She married Captain Kenneth Timken on May 1, 1943 at Hondo, Texas, riding to her wedding in an Army jeep. Mr. Timken was an elementary principal and administrator in the Topeka Public Schools. He died in 1994.

Survivors include a daughter, Jan Kays, a son-in-law, Steve Kays, two grandsons, Brad and Michael Kays, all of Topeka.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 pm, Saturday February 4 at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City, Kansas. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Derrick Inn in Ness City for lunch at 11:30 am. Inurnment will be at a later date.
