Ruth E. Colton, 97, died August 28, 2003 at Brandon Woods Retirement Community, Lawrence, Kansas afer a brief illness.

She was born March 31, 1906 at Lubec, Maine, the daughter of Reverend Stephen Marshall and Mary O. Dysart Bowles. She was one of eleven children.

With her family, she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she graduated from high school. She worked at Dayton's Department Store after graduation.
She and her husband later moved to Kansas City, Missouri and Topeka, Kansas While in Topeka, she was a member of the Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Stormont-Vail Hospital Women's Auxiliary, and during WWII she was a volunteer with the American Red Cross. She was an accomplished knitter, as well as other handwork skills and she loved to play the piano and bridge.

She married Royal Clayton Colton on September 23, 1926. He preceded her in death on July 18, 1983. She was also preceded in death by two children, Priscilla Eileen Miles and Royal Clayton Colton Jr., and a grandchild.

Survivors include two daughters, Eleanor Ruth Brunott, of Topeka, Kansas, and Marion Leila Vernon, of Lawrence, Kansas; eight grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Services will be at noon Monday, September 8, 2003 at the Mausoleum Chapel at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Burial will follow. A memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003 at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Lawrence, Kansas.
