Russell Hill, 82, of Topeka, passed away peacefully at Midland Hospice of respiratory illness on .Tuesday, May 12, 2009.
Russell was born July 23, 1926 in Huntington Park, California, to Roland and Luella (Miser) Hill. He served in the United States Air Force during WW II serving over a total eight years before being honorably discharged.
Mr. Hill served on the Topeka Police Department from 1953 to 1982, retiring as Assistant Police Chief. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and the Fraternal Order of Police.
He is survived by his loving wife, Anna of 60 years. Russell married Anna Louise Weinkauf on September 24, 1948 in Topeka, Kansas. Other surviving family members include his son, Russell Hill, Jr. and wife Colleen, of Alpharetta, GA; his daughter, Connie Poort and husband Rene, of Topeka; his brother, Charles Hill and wife Betty, of Yucca Valley, CA; five grandchildren, Angela Barron and husband, Doc, Matthew Hill and wife Carolina, Mallory Hill, Hannah Poort, Hunter Poort; and a great-grandson, Austin Barron.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 15, 2009 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 4211 NW Topeka Blvd, Topeka 66617. Interment with military honors will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. Mr. Hill will lie in state after 3 p.m., Thursday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church.
