Russell Brooks

July 18, 1941 — September 11, 2015

Russell "Bud" Brooks, 74 of Topeka lost his battle with cancer on September 11th, 2015. Bud was born in Topeka, KS and was raised by his parents Frances and Leighton Markley. Bud was a graduate of Topeka High School class of 1961 and received a degree from Washburn University in Criminal Justice. He served in the National Guard from 1961- 1968 and in the Army Reserve from 1978 - 1985. From 1970-1996 he worked for the Topeka Police Department working primarily as the Director of Public Relations and retired with the rank of Lieutenant. From 1997-2007 he was the Director of Security at Blue Cross Blue Shield. Bud married his high school sweetheart Mary Mumford in 1961 and they spent 55 wonderful years together. He is survived by his wife and children; Dana (Robin), Stefani, Joseph (Tammy), Michael (Tish); nine grandchildren; two brothers; one sister; nieces and nephew; and many cousins. His parents and his beloved Granny preceded him in death. Bud wore many different hats but none that he was more proud of than being a husband, father, and grandfather. His family was his most cherished accomplishment. Bud enjoyed classic cars and street-rodding. In 2005, he returned to his music roots and played in numerous bands, jam sessions, and family functions up until his last performance on August 28th, 2015. He referred to his beloved band-mates as "his brothers from another father." Bud was cremated. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, September 15th at Highland Heights Christian Church, 2930 SE Tecumseh Road, Tecumseh. The family will receive friends at the Church starting at 9:00am.
