Russell Bridwell

Dr. Russell Eugene Bridwell, 78 Topeka, passed away at Midland Hospice House Friday evening, April 8, 2005.

Russell was born on Nov. 22, 1926 in Ottawa, Kansas, the son of Roy and Minnie Bridwell.

He attended Topeka public schools and he was a graduate of Topeka High School. He was a graduate of the University of Kansas and belonged to the Phi Chi frateernity. He graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1951 as an otorhinolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor.) He practiced medicine as a staff physician in the ENT department at the University of Kansas for several years.

He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Frankfort, Germany where he set up the ear, nose and throat department in the Army Dispensary. He also practiced at the 97th General Hospital before he returned to Kansas. Dr. Bridwell moved to Topeka in 1959 to join Doctors Powers and Preston in an EENT practice. He was an active staff member at Sormont-Vail Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Health Center and Santa Fe Hospital.

He also treated patients in the EENT office from 1959 until he retired in 1992.

He was a member of the Shawnee County Medical Society, a Life member of the Kansas City OORL (Opthomology Otorhinolaryngology), the Board of Otolaryngology, the First Presbyterian Church, the Lion's Club, and a long time member of the Topeka Country Club. He enjoyed playing golf in his free time.

He married Dorothy Culbreath on August 20, 1950. She survives. He will also be missed by a daughter, Deborah Elwood and her husband Jase, Overland Park, Kansas; a son, Roderick Bridwell and his wife Dana; Topeka, Kansas; another daughter, Barbara Tatera and her husband Robert, Geneva, Switzerland. There are seven grandchildren, Keith Elwood, Kristine Elwood, Heather Ent and her husband David, Cassandra Bridwell, Jared Bridwell, Lindsay Tatera, Kelly Tatera; and one great grandchild, Hannah Ent.

A brother Kenneth Bridwell and his wife Vera Topeka, Kansas; a brother-in-law Charles Harlan Culbreath and his wife Edee, Atascadero, California.

A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at FIrst Presbyterian Church. Private Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Dr. Bridwell will lie in state after 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 11, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
