Ruby E. Harrison, 96, of Topeka, passed away Friday, Nov. 17, 2006 at a local hospital.
She was born March, 26, 1910 on a farm near Courtland, Kan., the daughter of John Frederick and Anna Maria Othburg Swanson.
She lived on the farm and attended public schools in Scandia, KS. She moved to Topeka in the early thirties and became a longtime employee of Southwestern Bell Telephone. She married Howard L. Harrison on June 10, 1935. They enjoyed a very happy marriage until Howard's death in 1979. She was the 10th of 11 children of whom 9 including Olivia Swanson, Sadie Baker, Frederick Swanson, Ellen Swanson, Carl Swanson, Elva Millie Pahl, Clarence Swanson, Oscar Swanson and Mable Larson preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Evelyn F. McClain. She was a resident of Lexington Park Nursing Facility.
In addition, she is survived by nieces Georgia Lee Widener, Sharon Miller, Sharon Stooke, Norma Marvick, Ruth McGown, Carolyn Sanders, Joan Kallenberger, Barbara Beyer, Carole Gibbs; nephews , Charles Swanson, Fred Swanson, Robert Swanson, Harold Larson, Allen Larson and their children and the children of deceased nephew, Bud Swanson; Sue Nelson, Paula Brubaker,Greg Swanson, all of Topeka.
Ruby was a member of First Lutheran Church in Topeka as well as the Southwestern Bell Pioneers. She was a great homemaker, wonderful gardener and loved to play the organ. She had a beautiful organ in her home that she was very proud of. Ruby and her husband loved to travel and visited many parts of this country. After her husbands death, she and her sister Evelyn, with whom she was very close, spent many hours together and took many pleasurable trips. Ruby will always be remembered by her family and friends for her kindness and bright outlook on life.
Mrs. Harrison will lie in state after 1:00 pm, Monday, Nov. 20 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm, Tuesday, Nov. 21 at First Lutheran Church with interment to follow in the Mt. Hope Mausoleum.
