Ruby Creighton

Ruby M. Creighton, 90, of Topeka, passed away Thurs., Oct. 15, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital. Born March 11, 1919, the daughter of Robert and Emma (Wischmeier) Creighton in rural Holton, KS.

Ruby attended Strickler's Business College; followed by working for the State Corporation Commission. She taught in a one room schoolhouse in Jackson County for 4 years prior to graduating Cum Laude in 1949 from Washburn University, where she was elected to three honor organizations.

Ruby was employed with the federal government for 32 years, 30 of those as a Claims Representative for the Social Security Administration.

Ruby's memberships include First United Methodist Church for 50 years; United Methodist Women; Breakfast Club Sunday School Class; life member of the Topeka YWCA (Torch Bearers Group); life member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees; and a life member of the American Association of University Women where she was chosen Outstanding Branch Member in 1996.

Ruby was a strong person of faith, treasuring God's word especially, Romans: 8 "and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose".

She organized and participated in the annual ice cream social which has now become a church tradition; was a single, self-supporting woman, proactive in women's issues. Ruby was especially proud of her nephew, John O. "Tex" Creighton for having become an astronaut, piloting the Space Shuttle "Discovery".

Ruby enjoyed attending the space shuttle launch in Florida, the Houston Oilers playing football in the Astro Dome of which her nephew, Rich Creighton played; a trip to the Panama Canal; traveling in the fall viewing the fall colors; family reunions; composing inspirational poetry, including a poem in every Christmas letter she wrote and coaxing her 3 older brothers in continuing the family (Round Robin Letter).

Ruby was always thankful for her life in the Aldersgate Community.

Survivors include her ten nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her three older brothers, Edwin, Wilbur and Delbert Creighton.

A Celebration Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18 at First United Methodist Church, Klasse Chapel. Private inurnment has taken place in Holton Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First United Methodist Church, 600 SW Topeka Blvd., 66603 or Samaritan Fund at Aldersgate Village, 7220 SW Asbury Drive, 66614.
