Royal Sanborn

Royal G. Sanborn, known to his friends as "Sandy", 99, Topeka, KS; died Thursday, April 14, 2011, at the Peggy Kelly House.

He was born Jan. 11, 1912 in Hope, KS to Royal W. and Emma Sanborn. He worked in his parents' general store and upon graduation from high school, he attended Brown Mackie Business School in Salina, KS.

He met and married the love of his life Dorothy Jean Martin on May 29, 1937, enjoying 67 years of marriage. They were blessed with three children, Martin, Karen, and Sara.

Sandy became an avid OU football fan when his son, Martin, attended OU. He had season tickets and attended the games for many years. On September 11, 2004, he was honored as a long time season ticket holder on the field at OU.

Sandy worked for several years as a bank auditor and as a County Treasurer. He then joined AL Duckwall Stores Co. at the main office in Abilene, KS, where he retired in 1977 as the president of the company.

Upon retirement, Sandy and Dorothy Jean moved to La Quinta, California where they enjoyed meeting new friends, golfing, and serving at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, Palm Desert, California.

They later returned to their home state of Kansas and resided in Topeka to be close to family.

Sandy was preceded in death by his father and mother, Royal W. and Emma Sanborn, his wife, Dorothy Jean, his son, Martin and his grandson Michael Squires.

Surviving family members include two daughters, Karen (James) Hindman of Hollister, MO and Sara (Lyle) Squires of Topeka, KS; six granddaughters, Cristin Sanborn of El Segundo, CA, Tamara (James) Prescott of McPherson, KS, Heather (David) Smith of Tulsa, OK, Courtney (Lance) Green, Abigail Squires and Kimberly Squires all of Topeka, KS; two grandsons, Chad Sanborn of Clemente, CA and Joel Squires of Kansas City, MO; four great grandchildren, Timothy Prescott, Bethany Smith, Parker Green and Presley Green.

A memorial ceremony will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at Grace Episcopal Cathedral in Topeka, KS. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Peggy Kelly House, 1800 SW Fairmont Rd, Topeka, KS 66604 or Saint Francis Boys Home, 509 E Elm St, Salina, KS 67401 or Grace Episcopal Cathedral, 701 SW 8th Ave, Topeka, KS 66603.
