Roy Cockerham

Roy Webb Cockerham, 80, Topeka, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003 at Plaza West Care Center.

He was born April 21, 1923 in Galax, Virginia, the son of Mack and Grace Lundy Cockerham.

He married Hazel Hedges on June 28, 1946 at Indian Head, MD. She survives. Other survivors include 2 sons, Roy L. Cockerham and wife Pam and Robert K. Cockerham and wife Jeanette; 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters and 2 brothers.

Mr. Cockerham enlisted in the US Air Force in 1942. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for 35 missions behind German lines as a machine gunner. He also received numerous other medals. Following his retirement in 1966, he worked as a service representative for veterans for the State of Kansas for 19 years.

He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene for 44 years where he served as a church Elder, bus driver and Sunday School teacher. He gave generously to many causes and needy people. He served on the Topeka Rescue Mission board of directors.

Services will be 10:00 am Thursday at First Church of the Nazarene. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by Whiteman Air Force Base.

Mr. Cockerham will lie in state after 9 am Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7-8 pm.
