Roth A. Gatewood, 83, of Topeka, passed away on Monday, March 27th, 2017.

Roth A. Gatewood was born in Sylvan Grove, Kansas on September 1, 1933 to Ralph and Florence Gatewood. He spent his childhood in Sylvan Grove attending its public schools.

He attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, and the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where he graduated from the School of Business in 1955, and with a commission in the United States Air Force. He continued his education, attending Stanford University, eventually returning to the University of Kansas, where he received his Juris Doctorate degree. While at KU he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, the Beta Gamma Sigma/honorary business fraternity, and served on the Board of Editors of the University of Kansas Law Journal.

He served three years in the United States Air Force, in the Judge Advocate Group, and two years on the faculty of the KU School of Business, before joining the Santa Fe Railway Company Law Department in 1961, where he worked until his retirement in 1989.

Roth was an active member of the Bar Association of Kansas and the Topeka Bar Association, admitted to practice in the Tenth Circuit, and the Eighth Circuit of the Federal Courts of Appeal, and the United States Supreme Court. He served on the Board of Editors of the Journal of the Kansas Bar Association, and participated in the programs and activities of various legal groups.

As a long time Topeka resident, he was active in many community institutions and programs, such as the Topeka Civic Theatre, Mulvane Art Museum, YMCA, and Door Step, Inc. He was a member of the Arab Shrine, in the Greeters Unit and the Royal Order of Jesters. He enjoyed golf, and after retirement became a member of Master Gardeners. He was one of the oldest members of the Topeka Jazz Workshop.

In 1977 he married Joan P. Mills. By a previous marriage he had three children, Mary Boatright of Lawrence, Matthew Gatewood, of Lawrence, and Adam Gatewood, of Topeka. He and Joan, who also had three children by a previous marriage, Gregory Mills of Annapolis, MD, Steven Mills of Kansas City, and Arthur (Mac) of Topeka, combined their families, and have seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

The family will greet friends and host a reception from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 31, 2017 at the Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1275 SW Boswell, Topeka.

Private burial will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Roth's honor may be made to the Topeka Jazz Workshop, Topeka Civic Theatre, or to the Salvation Army.

Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
