Roger Myers

Roger A. (Allen) Myers, 74, Topeka, passed away on Friday, May 20, 2011 at a local hospital.

Roger was born July 6, 1936 in St. Joseph, Missouri to I. Paul and Clara Myers. He graduated from Salina Central High School in Salina in 1954.
Roger graduated from Kansas State University in 1958 with a degree in Journalism, where he was the Editor of the K-State collegian during the 1957 fall semester. Roger worked as a reporter for the Kansas City Star, the Hutchinson News, the Salina Journal, and in the Public Relations department of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company (now AT&T). He returned to journalism in 1964 with the Topeka Capital-Journal, where he remained for 37 years until 2001. While at the Capital-Journal he covered primarily the House of Representatives, Senate and Governor's beat. When he retired from the Capital-Journal in April 2001, he was honored by the Kansas state House and Senate with Resolutions of Commendation for his exemplary service in reporting the Kansas political and legislative news. He also spent two years as the Washington, D C. bureau chief for the Capital-Journal.

Roger served in the United States Army Reserve for over 31 years, retiring at the rank of Colonel in 1989. He served in several capacities, including Quartermaster and Infantry units, before specializing in the Transportation arm of the Reserves. He received several medals and commendations while in the Reserves, including the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Reserve Overseas Training Ribbon.

Roger married Irene Manglesdorf of Kansas City, Kansas in 1960. They divorced in 1971. Roger is survived by his brother, Dan (Connie) Myers of Auburn, and his nieces Jennifer (Chuck) Brown of Golden, Colorado, Julie (Bill) Spiegel of Manhattan, and Sharon (Roger) Tevault of Olympia, Washington. He had three grand nephews and one grand niece.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Roger will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
