Roger Mills

Roger Wayne Mills, 63, Topeka, passed away, Thursday, October 13, 2005 at Midland Hospice House. He was born Aug. 20, 1942 in Florence, South Carolina, the son of Benjamin A. and Gertrude Hewitt Mills.

He graduated from McClenaghen High School in Florence, South Carolina in 1960 and Clark Business School in Topeka. He attended Washburn University. Roger served in the U.S. Air Force from 1960 to 1964.

He worked for St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center for 29 years. He started in the business office in 1972 and soon thereafter took a small copy machine in the basement of the Hospital and developed the Hospital in-house printing department as it remains today. Because of declining health, he worked briefly in the hospital housekeeping department but was soon forced to retire in 2001. He was well known within the hospital, a familiar face to all. He loved to talk. He loved to hug.

He owned and operated JCW printing and was a Topeka Capital-Journal newspaper carrier for many years, having delivered both the morning and evening papers.

He was a past member and officer of the Topeka Jaycees and a member of the Printing Craftsman of Topeka. He served as president of the client's council at Midland Adult Day Program, where he attended from February 2004 until his death.

His long encounter with illness began in 1993 with appendix cancer and colon cancer in 1994. Liver disease, which eventually took his life, began in 1999.

He is survived by his wife Connie of 40 years. They were married on December 18, 1964. A son Jason Mills and his wife April, Topeka; two grandchildren, Lauren and Ewan Mills, Topeka; a brother, Frank Mills and his wife Gayle of St. Ann, MO; a sister in law Evelyn Mills, Florence, SC; several nieces and nephews; his extended family of in laws, Bob and Peg Cooper, Steve and Dee Dee Clifton and their children Courtney and Brett; Mitch and Mary Cooper and their son Max; and great nephew Connor.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Ben, Johnnie and W.R..

A funeral service will be at 11:00am Monday, October 17, 2005 at First Congregational Church. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Mr. Mills will lie in state after 8:00 a.m. Sunday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be given to the St. Francis Hospital Foundation, 1700 W. 7th Street, Topeka, KS 66606 or to Midland Adult Day Program, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
