Roberta Maxine Gillespie, 93, Topeka, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at Midland Hospice. She was born on December 8, 1919 in Topeka, Kansas to Samuel J. and Ida L. (Travis) Swearingen.
Roberta graduated from Topeka High School in 1938 and Emporia Teacher's College two years later. After teaching, she began work with the Santa Fe Railroad, where she worked in freight rates. She retired in 1980.
In November of 1950, she married Vernon R. Gillespie at Frist Presbyterian Church. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, active prime timers, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Rail Road Retiree's and Topeka Travel Club.
Roberta is survived by her sister, Lois Cutright, Topeka; nephews, a niece and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister, Gertrude Mitchell.
Funeral services will be at 10 am, Thursday, March 14 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery.
