Robert L.D. Nelson, 70, Auburn, Kansas, died Saturday, July 5, 2003 at Midland Hospice House.
He was born Jan. 8, 1933 in Lindsborg, KS, the son of Roy and Blanche Silver Nelson. He graduated from Lindsborg High School, and received a BS and MS degree from Emporia State Teachers College.
Mr. Nelson lived in Lindsborg, Emporia, Chanute, Smith Center, Salina, Omaha, NE, and Lincoln, NE before moving to Topeka in 1985. He taught school and coached at Royster Jr. High School, Chanute for 3 years and at Smith Ceneter High School for 4 years. He worked for New York Life for 31 years and was a training manager when he retired in May, 1997.
He served in the US Army for 2 years during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of Countryside United Methodist Church and the Midland Hospice Care board of directors both in Topeka, a member of the Charter Life Underwriters, KNEA and a VFW post in Smith Center. He formerly was a member of the Jaycees.
Mr. Nelson participated in the 50 & over and 60 & over softball leagues in Topeka, and was an active participant in the Kansas Senior Olympics.
He married Marjorie Nelson on March 14, 1953 in Marquette, KS. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Debralee Nelson and Chris Grimm of New York City; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Jack A. and Lori Nelson and Brian L. and Andrea Nelson, all of Omaha; 4 grandchildren, Natalie Nelson, Jaclyn Nelson, Triston Nelson, and Tyler Nelson all of Omaha; a sister, Muriel Strange of Lindsborg; a brother, Richard Nelson of Lawrence.
Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday at Countryside United Methodist Church. Inurnment services will be 11:00 am Wednesday at Elmwood Cemetery, Lindsborg, with a Ft. Riley burial detail conducting military honors.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 pm Monday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
