Robert Martin

Robert Eugene Martin, 83, died on January 30, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.

He was born October 15, 1924 in Topeka the son of Dwight and Emily Martin.

He married Kathleen Dunnaway on July 12, 1944. They had two children, Robert R. Martin, Bradenton, Florida, and Catherine Scott, Newton, Kansas. They were divorced. On February 17, 1981, he married Dorothy Percival, who survives.

He is also survived by one sister, Delores Spencer, Topeka, and two brothers, Richard Martin, Topeka and Donald Martin, Streetor, Illinois; and four grandchildren, Kevin Gauntt, Kansas City, MO, Katie Gauntt, Newton, KS, and Jonathan and Eric Martin, Brandenton, FL.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Morin.

Mr. Martin was a Captain on the Topeka Police Force, and retired in 1979 after 30 years of service.

He was a World War II Navy veteran who served on the Aircraft carried, Randolph as a Torpedo bomber radioman and gunner. He was decorated with the Air Medal for 17 missions in the Pacific.

As a police officer, he received the Medal of Valor, the Department's highest award for entering a burning trailer twice to save two children; and also received the Distinguished Citizen award from the City of Topeka.

The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 4, 2008 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Martin will lie in state at the funeral home after 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and visitation from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
