Robert Ginter Holmes, 87, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2014.
He was born February 21, 1926 at Dover, Kansas, to Clyde Walker and Jennie Mae (Ginter) Holmes.
He was raised in the Dover Community and graduated from Dover High School. He took courses in accounting and economics at Washburn University and University of Southern California. He was employed by Santa Fe Railroad for over 40 years and retired in 1986 from the Information Systems Department as Manager-Personnel Administration. He joined the Air Force in 1944 and served two years during WW II. He trained as a crew member on both the B17 and B29. His crew was in Atomic bomb training when Japan surrendered and the program was discontinued.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church for over 45 years. He later became a member of Grace Point Church where he remained until death. He was an active member and held positions both elective and voluntary in both churches. He was a member of the Downtown Optimist and American Legion.
Robert married Virginia May Slingerland on June 15, 1946. She died September 11, 1981. He married Alvina Arlene Kasper on November 26, 1988. She survives. Other survivors include four daughters, thirteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one expected in March. Daughters are Deborah Holmes, St. Louis, MO, Dianne (Mark) Watkins, Oakley, KS, Dagmar (Brad) Obert, Seattle, WA, and Melissa (Mark) Whaley, Conifer, CO. Grandchildren, Elijah Holmes, Jordan Holmes, Andrew (Erin) Watkins, Erin (Scott) Moeder, Alysa (Isaac) Seeland, Abigail, Anna and Alaina Obert, Kasper, Keefer, Kadn and Kole Whaley and Jude, son of niece Karin (Miles) Wooden. Great-grandchildren, Virginia Grace Watkins, Jordy August Moeder, Ezra Allen Seeland and Eden Zuzannah Watkins. He is also survived by two brothers, Calvin (Reta) Holmes, Topeka and David (Kitty) Holmes, Holton, KS, a sister, Ella Ann (Richard) Reinheimer, Tecumseh, KS, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Holmes, Topeka and a brother-in-law, David Bisel, Dade City, FL. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Clyde Holmes and a sister, Luella Bisel.
A Celebration of Life will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Grace Point Church, 5400 SW Huntoon, Topeka 66604. Robert will lie in state after 3 p.m., Monday, at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Private family interment with military honors will be at West Lawn Memorial Gardens, Topeka.
