Robert E. Duffens, 92, of Topeka, passed away February 23, 2016.
He was born January 19, 1924, in Salina, KS to Robert F. and Lena Duffens. Robert is survived by his wife Melva Jean Duffens, sons Gary Duffens (Mary) of Highlands Ranch, CO and Greg Duffens (Jane) of Topeka, his daughter Carol Puckett (Thomas)of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, four grandchildren and nine great grand-children, and his devoted Shih-Tzu, Jake.
He was educated at Washburn University where we was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and graduated in 1947. Prior to graduating Washburn, Robert served as a carrier pilot in the US Navy as a Lieutenant JG. Robert's love of flying continued in the Navy Reserves and privately with business and personal trips.
Robert and Jean spent much of the last 30 years sharing their time between Topeka and Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, FL where he enjoyed golf and fishing. They also enjoyed traveling and sailing in the Caribbean.
Robert devoted over 40 years to Duffens Optical and Duffens Contact Lens companies. Robert was both an inventor and innovator in the optical industry. Robert served as president of the Optical Wholesalers Assn. and was inducted as a charter member of the Optical Pioneers.
In addition to his business efforts, Robert was an active philanthropist , supporting many causes including Washburn University where he received an Honorary Doctor of Commerce , Arab Shrine, Cosmopolitan Club, Kappa Sigma and was a longtime member of Topeka Country Club.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2016, at Mount Hope Cemetery & Funeral Chapel, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka, Kansas 66604, where the family will receive guests one hour prior to the service. Entombment will follow. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting the family.
