Robert B. Craig

Rev. Robert Brown Craig, 87, Lee's Summit, Missouri, died Monday, August 22, 2005 at his home.

He was born Nov. 20, 1917 in Miami, Oklahoma, the son of Fred H. and Eva Brown Craig. He discerned his call early in like, preaching to the cows and chickens on his father's farm between Haviland and Lewis, Kansas.

His devout grandmother, Rosa Mardock Brown, helped shape his early years in the Society of Friends. He graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1945. He completed a Bachelor of Divinity from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, in 1948. He also obtained a M.A. degree from Scarritt College in Nashville. As an Elder in the Kansas East Annual Conference, he was pastor of United Methodist Churches in Moran, Ottawa, Sedan, Kansas City, Leavenworth, Marysville, Cottonwood Falls, and Altamont.

He married Bonnie Ann Stone in September, 1939, and together they reared three children, Fred Stone Craig of Topeka, Lin Sangals of Wichita, and Christopher John Craig of Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. Bonnie preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 1989. Two baby daughters, Elizabeth Ann and Carol Jean also preceded him in death.

He married Esther Lee Lane at John Knox Village in August, 1996. They enjoyed travel and visiting friends and family. She survives.

Other survivors include his three children, and five grandchildren, Darrell Craig of Seattle, Noel Craig of Wichita, Ty Reynolds of Lincoln, NE, Anne Reynolds of Elkins, AR, and Jenny Reynolds of Wichita; two great-grandchildren, Jasmine Craig of Wichita, and Spader Reynolds of Lincoln, NE; sister, Nona June Brown of Detroit, TX; two sisters-in-law, Sue Bandy of Joplin, MO and Cleta Auman of Riverton, KS; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Rev. Craig, in retirement, served as a volunteer chaplain at John Knox Village and wrote poetry. He published three small volumes of poetry. He also held positions in the Shepherd's Club and Senior Center in Lee's Summit.

Two memorial services are scheduled: 2:00 pm Friday at John Knox Village in Lee's Summit and 2:00 pm Saturday at Baxter Springs United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in Baxter Springs Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to John Knox Village, 400 NW Murray Rd., Lee's Summit, MO 64081, Baxter Springs United Methodist Church, 1310 East Avenue, Baxter Springs, KS 66713, or to any of the churches he served as pastor.
