Richmond A. Dalton

Richmond A. "Rick" Dalton Jr., retired managing/executive editor of The Topeka Capital-Journal, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, at his home. He was 85.

Mr. Dalton was born March 29, 1921, at Abilene, Kan., to Richmond A. Dalton Sr. and Clara Louise Hene Dalton and was the adopted son of Josephine Bublies Dalton, all of Enterprise, Kan., where Mr. Dalton was raised. He was graduated from Enterprise High School in 1938 and attended Baker University before serving in the Army from 1942-1946. He received a B.S. degree in journalism from the University of Kansas in 1948.

Mr. Dalton and Margie J. Stone of Minneapolis, Minn., were wed on June 3, 1946. She survives at home in Topeka.

Rick Dalton began his career in journalism in 1936 as a "printer's devil" at The Enterprise Journal. Over the years, he worked for various Army and university newspapers, The Manhattan Mercury, The Garden City Telegram, The Topeka State Journal and The Topeka Capital-Journal, retiring in 1986.

He helped guide the merger that created The Topeka Capital-Journal, met with President Reagan at the White House, directed coverage of the 1966 tornado in Topeka and the funeral of President Eisenhower in Abilene and served with the William Allen White Foundation and on the Pulitzer Prize jury.

Mr. Dalton was a member of Crestview United Methodist Church, Sigma Delta Chi national journalism fraternity, Kappa Sigma fraternity, the Topeka Press Club, Rotary Club of Topeka, the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce, the Associated Press Managing Editors Association, the Masons and the Arab Shrine.

Other survivors include a son, Kevin Dalton of Mission, Kan.; a daughter, Nancy Gaskell of Gaithersburg,MD; a brother, Bruce Dalton of Salina, Kan.; and three grandchildren, Ryan L., Andrew L., and Rebecca L. Gaskell, all of Gaithersburg. Another brother, Chris Dalton of Albuquerque, NM., preceded Rick Dalton in death.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm, Tuesday, September 26, at Crestview United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be at Hope Cemetery in Enterprise at a later date.
