Richard Walker Ryan, former Director of the Kansas Legislative Research Department, died late Tuesday afternoon October 19, 2021. Years ago, after his wife died, he wrote his own obituary. Those of you who knew him will hear his voice clearly in its brevity and to-the-pointedness, as well as in his refusal of funeral or memorial services. I (his daughter) had to promise faithfully not to amend it. But he didn't say I couldn't add a preface.
Dad's words to you:
Richard Walker Ryan died on October 19, 2021. No one should feel sad; he never expected to live for 95 years. He is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Ryan England, and son, Kelly Ryan, two grandsons, Richard England and Patrick Ryan, and Patrick's mother, Mary. He had a dandy and tolerant wife, Kathryn Creel Ryan, who died ten years ago.
Richard was no fan of funerals so he is not having one. In lieu thereof, he suggests contributions by those so inclined to the Capper Foundation or to the Washburn University Foundation or Westminster Presbyterian Church (and here he would prefer contributions go to the Kay Ryan memorial fund at Westminster.)
Adios.
