Richard O. May, Sr., 97, Topeka, died Monday, October 25, 2010 at Aldersgate Village Health Unit.
He was born Oct. 29, 1912 in Wakarusa, the son of Arthur O. and Nellie May and was a lifelong resident of Shawnee County.
Mr. May attended Topeka Public Schools and graduated from Washburn University in the class of 1934
He worked for John Morrell Co. for twelve years prior to founding Topeka Excavating Co. in 1945. He served in the construction industry for over 35 years through Topeka Asphalt Co. and May, Ransom and Sheetz Contractors, Inc.
He served terms on the boards of Kansas Contractors Association, Topeka Construction Association, Kansas Building Trades Health and Welfare Association, Kansas Baptist Convention, and Kansas Baptist Foundation.
Mr. May was an active member of West Side Baptist Church serving as Moderator, Deacon, Trustee, and in many other positions. He also was a member of Topeka Lodge #17 AF&AM and the Scottish Rite Bodies.
He married Hazel L. Hofwolt who preceded him in death on July 14, 1948. He then married Hazel Irene Engstrom on August 20, 1949 in Salina. She died August 27, 2004.
Survivors include two daughters, Janice Grogan (Gary) of West Des Moines, IA, Judith Juba of Baltimore, MD; two sons, Richard O. May, Jr. (Nancy) and Steven A. May (Renae), both of Topeka; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at West Side Baptist Church. Private inurnment will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
