Richard E. Long, 87, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2021.
He was born September 9, 1933, in Hopeville, Iowa, the son of Roy and Anna (Gildsig) Long. He graduated from Afton High School and went on to attend Washburn University.
He was a longtime member for over 60 years with First United Methodist Church. He was very active throughout his time there. He filled numerous roles such as teaching Sunday school and was a huge part of the choir for over 50 years.
He volunteered at the Combat Air Museum, was a member of the Elks here in Topeka, and he helped run BINGO events for the veterans at the Topeka VA. For many years he helped with the Friends of the Library book sale and was an avid collector of stamps.
He served in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Forbes Field in Topeka.
He was the head accountant for the Kansas State Board of Agriculture until his retirement.
Richard married Donna Rise, she preceded him in death in 1984. Richard later married Sharon McDorman, she survives. Other survivors include his daughter, Linda (Bill) McInerney; step-son, David Paxton; grandchildren, Ashley McInerney, Elizabeth McInerney, Gregory Paxton, and Kiera Paxton and his sister, Cora (Chuck) Walling.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Donna and siblings, Paul Long, and Carolyn Jacobs.
Cremation is planned and no services will be held.
