Richard L. Aschenbrenner, M.D., 70, of Lawrence, passed away Friday, January 13, 2012.
Richard was born on August 10, 1941, in Thomas County, Kansas, son of Phillip and Rose (Schuster) Aschenbrenner. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1964 and the University of Kansas Medical School in 1968. Richard served in the US Army Medical Corps. from 1967-1978. He was honorably discharged as a lieutenant colonel.
From 1978-1998, Richard was Director of the Respiratory Department of Bay Harbor Hospital, Lomita, CA. His private practice specialized in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. Richard married Ann Flynn on December 29, 1977, in Littleton, CO.
Richard is survived by his wife, Ann Aschenbrenner, Lawrence; daughter, Annie (Jeff) Keil, Atascadero, CA; sons, Richard Aschenbrenner, Waipahu, HI; David Aschenbrenner, Goleta, CA; Ralph Aschenbrenner, Cayucos, CA; and Stephen (Kayse) Aschenbrenner, Lawrence; grandchildren, Allison and William Keil; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and nine siblings, John, Regina, Irene, Steve, Frank, Rose, Anne, Ralph, and Dorothy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at Mater Dei Holy Name Catholic Church, Topeka. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Grace Hospice, 3715 SW 29th, Suite 100, Topeka, KS 66614, Learning for Life Center, 1709 SW Randolph Ave., Topeka, KS 66604, and Wounded Warriors Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675-8517. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, Topeka, is assisting the family with arrangements.
