Richard Ayre Hickam, Topeka, Kan., died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, May 15, 2008. He was 70.
He was born October 25, 1937 in Webb City, Missouri, to the late George Alfred Hickam and Vera Hazel (Bishop) Hickam. After graduating from Webb City High School in 1956, he attended Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri. Serving eight years in the National Guard as a cannoneer and a medical aidman, he attained the rank of SP5/E-5.
On December 26, 1965, he was united in marriage to Sandra Lou French in Carthage, Mo.
Mr. Hickam worked as a pharmaceutical salesman for Bristol Laboratories and the E.R. Squibb Corporation from 1963 to 1972. In 1972, he moved to Topeka, Kansas and began working for his brother at Royal Tire of Topeka, Inc. In 1974, he acquired ownership of the corporation and operated the establishment until it closed and he retired in 2001.
Mr. Hickam is survived by his wife, Sandy; his son, Matthew and his wife, Stacey Hickam, Topeka, Kan.; his daughter, Elizabeth and her husband, David Ardell, Kansas City, Mo.; three grandchildren, Georgia Hickam, Claudia Hickam and Julia Hickam, Topeka, Kan.; one sister, Kathleen Conner, Greenville, SC; and one brother, James R. Hickam, Grove, Okla. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ben George Hickam.
A memorial service for Richard A. Hickam will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave. in Topeka. Mr. Hank Nelson, pastor, will officiate.
