Richard H. Wendland, 64, lifetime resident of Topeka, passed away Friday, Dec. 16, 2005 at his home.
He was born Dec. 10, 1941 in Topeka, the son of Richard and Hazel Wendland.
Mr. Wendland attended Belvour Elementary School, Highland Park High School and Washburn University. He was on the school board of USD 437 Auburn Washburn for 12 years, serving as president for four years. He was active in organized sports for children, coaching basketball in the optimist club and softball at Ken Berry.
Rick was the owner of Sunflower Rental of Topeka, Sunflower Rental of Lawrence, Blue Springs Rental of Blue Springs, MO., General Tire of Topeka and Ace Concrete Cutting of Topeka. His first job at the age of 14 was caddying at Shawnee Country Club. At age 16 , he started work at Sunflower Rental in Topeka and was responsible for the growth and development of the company for 48 years. His passions in life were his family, work and golf. He was a member of Shawnee Country Club and Topeka Country Club.
Rick is survived by his wife Kay Wanamaker Wendland, 1 son, Richard M. Wendland, 2 daughters, Stacey Wendland, Lawrence, Kansas and Nicole Selvidge of Topeka. He is also survived by 3 granddaughters, 1 grandson and 4 sisters.
Mr. Wendland will lie in state after 12 pm Monday, Dec.19, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005 at First Congregational Church, 1701 Collins, with burial to follow in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery.
