Richard Finney

Richard (Dick) Hastings Finney, 80, Topeka, passed away at his home on April 27, 2005.

Dick was born October 6, 1924 in Topeka, the son of Roy A. and Ina G. Stewart Finney. After gradutating from Topeka High School in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for 3 years.

Dick graduated from the University of Kansas School of Engineering in 1948 and did graduate studies in Civil Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1951 he joined Finney and Turnipseed . He was involved in 5000 investigations, inspections and surveys of buildings during his career. Dick was the structual engineer for many well known buildings, which included the Docking State Office Building, Bank of America tower, and additons to Stormont Vail and St. Francis Hospitals along with buildings on the Washburn University and University of Kansas campuses. He retired as Chairman of the Board of Finney and Turnipseed in 1998.

Amid his professional successes was the care and support of his wife, Joanna Shaw Finney. Their married life together began on February 1, 1948 in Topeka. They celebrated their 54th Wedding anniversary shortly before her death.

He is survived by daughters, Rosalynn Redmond, Prairie Village, Carolynn Holmes, and a son, Keith Finney, both of Topeka; 8 grandchildren, Kirk Redmond, Renee Stuckey, Megan Redmond, Nick Holmes, Bob Holmes, Rebecca Holmes, Anna Finney and Sara Finney; 3 great grandchildren, Carson Redmond, Caroline and Owen Stuckey; a sister, Alice Gabbard, Corpus Christy, TX; and caregiver and friend, Jackie Haflich.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church. Private Inurnment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the University of Kansas Endowment Fund, School of Engineering, 1891 Constance Avenue, PO Box 928, Lawrence, Kansas 64044-0928.
