Richard D. Ellison, 93, of Topeka, passed away Monday, December 12, 2016.
He was born August 9, 1923 in Topeka, the son of Luther and Grace (Keller) Ellison.
Richard attended Topeka schools before joining the U.S. Navy in December, 1942. He spent three years aboard the USS Trathen, participating in most of the major battles in the South Pacific Theatre.
Richard and his high school sweetheart, Betty Gudd were married in Topeka on February 25, 1946.
He worked with his father at the Ellison Garage at 27th & Buchanan. He and his brother Loyd became the owners when Luther passed. Upon his retirement from the garage, Richard worked with the maintenance crew at Heartland Park Raceway for seven years. During the winter months, he and Betty traveled with their 5th wheel trailer, enjoying visiting family and friends.
He is survived by his sons Lanny and David, 3 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
Richard will lie in state after 4:00 p.m., Monday, December 19, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 S.W. 10th Ave, Topeka, KS 66604, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m., that evening. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 20 at the funeral home with burial with military honors to follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Midland Care, 200 S.W. Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
