Richard M. "Mike" Burns, 78, of Topeka, passed way, Monday, June 7, 2004 at a Topeka hospital.
He was born January 1, 1926 in Topeka, the son of William Jay and Maud Annabelle McVey Burns.
Mike began publication of a neighborhood newspaper, "The Bungalow News" in 1937 in his home at 114 N. Courtland, Topeka. This publication was circulated in some 20 countries worldwide.
He was editor of the Topeka High School "World" in 1944.
Mike graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan in 1948 with a degree in Ag Journalism. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity at K State.
He served as Advertising Manager of Morrell Meat Packers until termination of the Topeka operation at the time of the 1951 flood. He became field editor of the Kansas Farmer and Missouri Ruralist magazines in 1951. Mr. Burns was named publications editor for the Kansas State Board of Agriculture in 1954.
In 1955 he started Burns Floral Co. & Greenhouses at 801 Fairlawn, and was active in the floral/greenhouse business until retirement in 2002.
He married Elizabeth Perkins, of Manhattan, August 4, 1951. She survives. Other survivors include:

and eleven grandchildren.
Cremation is planned. Graveside inurnment services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2004 at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
