Reverend Thomas Nyquist

The Reverend Thomas William Nyquist, 80, Topeka, died August 8, 2005 at Topeka Presbyterian Manor.

He was born December 6, 1924 in Scobey, Montana, the son of John S. and Agnes Walstrom Nyquist Sr. The family moved to Minnesota in 1933, where he graduated from Milaca High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army in the Medical and Adjutant General's Departments from 1944-46, including 15 months in Italy.

He received a BA degree from the University of Minnesota in 1948, and a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary of Princeton, NJ in 1951. He was ordained to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1951 and served churches in Waukesha, WI (1951-53), Litchfield, MN (1953-59), Iola, KS (1959-89) and nearby Moran, KS (1976-89), retiring the end of 1989 to Topeka, KS. Throughout his ministry he participated in various activities within the higher governmental bodies of the presbyteries and synods to which he belonged. He engaged in community service throughout his career and continued to serve as a volunteer in retirement.

Rev. Nyquist married Marjorie Auld Landis at Fort Collins, CO on May 10, 1953. She survives at the home. Also surviving are their children, Barbara Landis McIntosh, Iola, Judith A. Kettle, Lawrence, and Thomas M. Nyquist, Topeka; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Katherine McAlpine, Sun City, AZ ; two brothers, John Nyquist Jr. and Jeremy Nyquist both of Minneapolis, MN. One brother, Robert Nyquist preceded him in death.

Cremation is planned and a private family inurnment will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery. A Memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, August 12, 2005 in the Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
