Rev. Harold M. Murray, Jr., 79, of Topeka, passed away Monday, February 3, 2014.
Harold was born August 17, 1934, in Valley Falls, KS, son of Harold "Buck" and Opal (Fulghem) Murray, Sr. He graduated from Valley Falls High School, El Dorado Junior College and Emporia State University.
Harold honorably served in the US Army.
He was united in marriage to Climeta Darlene Dorsey on May 25, 1957.
Harold retired from Topeka USD #501 after 30 years of service. He worked as a counselor at Topeka High School, Topeka Education Center, Landon Middle School, Avondale East, Quinton Heights, Hudson, Sumner, and Scott Elementary Schools. Harold was a GED and PE teacher as well as a Coach for many years. He was the JV Assistant Basketball Coach from 1982-2002 at Topeka West High School, and Assistant Football and Track Coach from 1982-1987 at Roosevelt Junior High School. Harold always reminded his students to tell themselves "I Am Somebody."
Harold was an ordained minister and pastored the congregation at Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church for 25 years.
He is survived by his wife, Climeta Murray, Topeka; children, Mark (Catrece) Murray, Topeka, Mia (Eddie) Lane, Rowlett, TX, and Matthew (Julie) Murray, Topeka; siblings, Iona (Michael) Moore, Emporia, David (Vulmy) Murray, Omaha, NE, and Rosemary (Earl) Harris-Weissgerber, Menominee, MI; beloved grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces and friends.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Pauline Pope, Joseph Murray and Herbert Murray.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 10, 2014 at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, Topeka. Interment will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka.
Harold will lie in state & visitation will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, Topeka.
