Rebecca Beerman Shapiro, 91, of Topeka, died May 23, 2009 at Stormont Vail Hospital.
Rebecca was born August 13, 1917 in Waco, Texas to David and Leah Beerman. She was a graduate of Baylor University, with degrees in French and Business Administration, and later attended Washburn University, 1961-1965, where she earned a Bachelor of Psychology. While studying at Washburn, she volunteered in helping adults earn their GED. Rebecca married Topeka native, Heiman Shapiro, on March 16, 1947. Heiman died February 28, 1986. Rebecca was a member of Temple Beth Sholom, where she was a member of Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood and served on boards of both. She served as Temple Treasurer for 6 years and President for one month.
Rebecca is survived by her two daughters; Lia (Wainwright) Felix of Brooklyn, NY and Joyce Shapiro of Boulder, CO, 3 nieces; Linda Gunther of Columbus, OH, Sandra Dillon of Prospect, KY, and Jan Abrams of New York, NY, and a nephew, Mark Shapiro of Boulder, CO. Rebecca is preceded in death by two sisters, Mollie Kahn and Idella Barshop, and a nephew, Kenneth Kahn.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26th, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, with interment to follow at Topeka Cemetery. Rabbi Debbie S. Stiel will officiate. A luncheon will follow the burial at Temple Beth Sholom. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth Sholom or to a charity of choice.
