Raymond R. Compton, 81, of Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at his home. He was born on January 14, 1925 in Sarton, WV, the son of Elbert J. and Cordia E. Weikle Compton. He was an Army veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific theater. He moved to Topeka in 1946. He was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company for 36 years before retiring on May 1, 1982. He was a member of Golden Rule Lodge No. 90, AF&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion, Northland Christian Church and a past member of the Old Fiddlers & Pickers. He married Helen M. Carlson on July 26, 1947 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Ronald R. Compton of Fresno. CA, Stan G. and Daryl L. Compton, both of Topeka, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two brothers, Mason Compton of Irvine, CA, George Compton of Hutchinson, KS and two sisters, Helen Hogarth of Chester, VA and Hester Houchins of Chesapeake, VA. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Raymond will lie in state after Noon Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Thursday.
